Damn Tiger-Musky

Damn Tiger-Musky

High wind warning, rattlesnake warning, two of my least favorite warnings! So what was I doing on the banks of such a barren lake? As with most of my trips it all begins @ the vise, usually to many pbr’s & late nights tying fly’s that other fishermen only laugh at. Hours that turn into days then eventually years of tying dead animals on 2/0 hooks in pursue of brown trout is pretty much the answer, oh & the sign that reads one tiger-musky a day per fisherman, must be 40”. So against my better judgment I launched my 11’ aire raft with a trolling motor. Bucking against the wind, rain pouring down as 2-3’ white caps tossed me around like a rubber duck in a bathtub. I set out to find out how much I didn’t know. It was quite obvious the craft I had chosen was not the best of choices. After 4 hours of holding on for dear life I turned tail. As I striped in my 10” pbr fly I saw it, holly !!@#&&^%$?/ I yelled to my dog only to have the words ripped from my mouth by the wind, behind my fly swam a 40” tiger ! Pop pop stop, twitch fast, then slow figure 8???? Nothing worked? Then as fast as it showed it disappeared into the milky water. Soaking wet & cold I headed in, well ok after casting for 2 hours none stop. The morning came fast & calm, I headed out again cast after cast, hour after hour, nothing? Then I saw some bait fish boiling along the bank, there he is! I drop anchor & started casting, finally BAM he was on! ! An explosion, then straight to me, as he reached the boat total chaos broke loose with my dog barking @ the fish, him thrashing, me trying to keep him out of the anchor line & motor, all in my bathtub toy of a boat.  After about 5 min of this I grab the net & went for him, and of course just then he shook the hook & flopped out of the net! Over that fast, he was gone & I had not noticed the wind had blown me to the middle of the lake. So there you have it, 5,698 cast and 12 hours later a drift in my 11’ raft with little to no battery I headed in with one thing on my mind, a 16’ G3 river boat with a 50 horsepower motor & casting platform….Damn tiger-musky hunting is going to get expensive …. Cheers! Bury
