Fishing During Hunting Season by Johnny Mac

This is a time of year when not just fisherman are along the banks of our rivers. Many hunters in search of Whitetail deer are also in the river bottoms, these areas are prime habitat for Whitetail. I cannot count how many times I have been fishing one of our states great rivers and someone has touched off a gun within a couple hundred yards of me. On more than one occation I have hit the deck because the shot was fired in my direction. It doesn't help matters that the majority of the gear we wear fishing is the same color as the deer.     Until hunting season closes I am never on the river without some kind of blaze orange clothing. A ball cap or an inexpensive mesh vest will let you be noticed. My faithful freind Thompson usually doesn't go more than 20 feet from me, unless he's retrieving, but he has a blaze orange vest just to be safe. If your dog tends to wander off during bathroom breaks it may be a good idea to leave fido at home until gun season wraps up. We sometimes forget the distance a shot can travel, especially one fired from a rifle.  So remember, safety first this time of year!
