Late summer fishing....
Wow! Summer is not yet done but it is going very quickly!!
School goes back next week and fishing remains excellent. According to the calendar the Autumnal equinox is in only 32 days. Days remain long and warm slowly but the evenings are already noticably cooler. Water temps are very tolerable in many of our local rivers and the early morning bite has been fabulous (Today, post a bit of rain last night - river temps look great!!) . As the day warms up - throwing a hopper (or hopper dropper combo) has been the MO of almost all of our guides... of course we have plenty of anglers who love to throw streamers- this has been productive and is only going to get better as the nights get longer, days cooler and the browns start moving. Think about streamers which incorporate the bronze, yellows and red colors of fall.
The tricos are hatching ...tiny mayflies and fine tippets but keep a few PMDs and baetis handy as cooler overcast days will see these slightly bigger mayflies about also.
If you feel you havn't fished enough yet this season - then make up any excuse to take advantage of our last month of summer. Early mornings - getting the guides underway have been busy but we still have days available. We have had lots of happy anglers through the store and our new range of fall clothing has arrived just in time. Some folks believe late summer, early fall is the best time to fish MT as crowds slowly thin out. The fish color up beautifully as they get ready for the winter and are in great condition after having had a wonderful summer.
Come and say hi - let us know how its going for you and fish as many of those lazy hazy days of summer while you can!
