New to Winston’s fleet in 2017, the Air, has proven to be a lighter and stronger alternative to the BIIIX, much of this can be attributed to it being the first Winston featuring the state of the art SuperSilica Resin System. While the butt section is stout and ready to handle sizeable trout it doesn’t feel overly stiff when casting. The rod sports a defined medium-fast action making it a pleasure to cast at close range and lethally accurate at 30-40 yards. After casting both the 5 and 6wt models it became clear that Winston has produced yet another line of performance minded rods without skimping a bit on aesthetics. The new nano-silica resin is baked into Winston’s Boron graphite eliminating excess weight from the carbon fiber after drying. In other words, this has allowed Winston to build a rod that is lighter, more sensitive and stronger than previous models without abandoning the classic action they’re known for. Where this rod really shines is in its presentation abilities, when it comes to technical dry fly fishing in tight quarters you’d be hard pressed to find a better option in its price range. At $945 this rod isn’t for the budget minded angler but rather the Winston aficionado’s and those looking for the best in modern graphite dry-fly rods. Made locally in Southwest Montana, the Twin Bridges based rod builder maintains a great reputation for customer service and has equipped the Air with a Lifetime Warranty. Come on by the shop to give it a try, you won’t be disappointed!
