Tying Flies for More Than Just Fly Fishing by Johnny Mac

This fall an odd idea came to me. Why don't I tie some bugs for ice fishing. I sat down at the vice and thought about what would be a good pattern. Almost instantly, my favorite winter ice fishing bait popped into my head; Maggots! They have always been the most productive thing I fish thru the ice up at Hyalite but I hate handling them once they warm up and start coming back to life. Since maggots are such a simple insect, you don't need much for materials and you can tie a lot of them fast. The one I tied uses Sparkle Yarn, Pheasant Tail, Gold French Tinsle, and a Black Sharpie. I couldn't wait for winter to fish them so I tried one this fall while fishing a river. Low and behold, they worked to catch some Cutthrout and Whitefish. If you would like to tie some, stop by the shop and I'll show you how I did mine.
