Your Salmonfly Update

An Update from the Guys Who Fish and Are On the Water:
Big Bug Update Time...

Big Hole - Reports from over the weekend were good - the Salmonflies were around Silver Bridge area on Saturday and Sunday, by Monday they were moving and last reliable report we had from someone actually on the water was that they were around Jerry Creek and working their way upstream. Given the warm weather forecasted this week, don't be surprised to find bugs all the way up around Sportsmans by the end of the week. Tons of goldenstones hatching as well - lots of guys doing better on black Salmonfly patterns and Goldenstones than on the bright orange bugs.

Lower Madison - Let's put all the rumors to bed for today - there aren't a ton of Salmonflies in Bear Trap Canyon, talked to several people that I know well that were up in the Canyon over the weekend and saw shucks that looked like they had been there for a while, and no adults to speak of still around on the bottom end of the Canyon. So there's a bunch of Goldenstones all over the place though, so if you head to the Lower, take the Goldenstone immitations along, leave the Salmonflies at home....

Upper Madison - Everyone wants to know when - the answer, \"depends on who you talk to and what your definition of the hatch is.\" With temps in the 70's and forecast to be in the 80's this Saturday/Sunday there could be an incredible hatch for the weekend warriors!!!! There have been reports of some flying down below town in the channels section. If you're a believer that it takes more than a few bugs to call it an official start to the hatch, don't go rushing up here because everyone has only seen one or two. Don't be surprised if the bugs pop off in the next couple of days with the warm temps, nymphs were about a foot to two feet off the banks and crawling around. It's close, and any day could be the day now!

Gallatin - Dropping and clearing, we're going to see a good fishable Salmonfly hatch on it this year, look for some bugs to start appearing sometime in the next week or so here if the weather stays nice.

Yellowstone - Dropping again since the last time we looked - should be dropping down to around 10K by the end of the week - be on the lookout for big bugs over here in the next week or so. The big bugs will usually start popping around the same time they do on the Gallatin and Madison (roughly) so we'll be looking for them over here within the next week or so...
